This list of peace, relief, and development organizations and related resources represents a few of the groups that we feel are making a strong contribution to fostering a culture of peace.

Alliance for International Conflict Prevention and Resolution »
The Alliance for International Conflict Prevention and Resolution is a network of the United States' most pre-eminent conflict prevention and resolution organizations. Formed in 1999 and incorporated in 2003, the Alliance is the only U.S.-based organization dedicated to uniting conflict management organizations and reaching out to related fields.

The Alliance's mission is threefold:

  • To maximize the contribution of conflict resolution to international peace-building,
  • To foster collaboration and learning among conflict resolution professionals and their counterparts in allied fields, and
  • To increase public understanding of and support for international conflict resolution.
To advance this mission, the Alliance's member organizations share lessons learned, develop new strategies for conflict analysis and intervention, collaborate on conflict resolution programs, and raise public awareness of conflict resolution issues and options.

In all of their activities, Alliance members cross disciplinary and organizational boundaries to work with professionals in allied fields, including official diplomacy, humanitarian relief, international development, military peacekeeping, human rights advocacy, and justice administration.

American Friends Service Committee »
This organization was founded by the Religious Society of Friends (the Quakers) in 1917. They carry out service, development and peace programs throughout the world.

Amnesty International »
Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights-- AI's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.

The Atrium Society »
The Atrium Society® is concerned with fundamental issues that prevent understanding and cooperation in human affairs. Our minds are conditioned by origin of birth, education and experiences. Atrium Society's intent is to bring the issue of conditioning, and the tremendous conflict conditioning creates, to the forefront of awareness and consideration. The resources presented herein are elements of a comprehensive program of books, audio/video tapes, teach training workshops, community events such as the "International Children's Disarmament Day"", a worldwide book donation project, Youth Peace Literacy and seminars designed to address the primary, secondary and tertiary causes of conflict.

Buddhist Peace Fellowship »
The mission of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship (BPF), founded in 1978, is to serve as a catalyst and agent for socially engaged Buddhism. Their intentions include:

  • Connect individual and social transformation
  • Practice nonviolence
  • Use participatory decision-making techniques
  • Protect and extend human rights
  • Support gender and racial equality, and challenge all forms of unjust discrimination
  • Work for economic justice and the end of poverty
  • Work for a sustainable environment

CARE »
CARE seeks a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security--CARE is one of the world's largest private international humanitarian organizations, committed to helping families in poor communities improve their lives and achieve lasting victories over poverty. Founded in 1945 to provide relief to survivors of World War II, CARE quickly became a trusted vehicle for the compassion and generosity of millions. Our reach and mission have greatly evolved and expanded since. Today, CARE USA is a part of CARE International, a confederation of 11 CARE organizations that strives to be a global force and partner of choice within a worldwide movement dedicated to ending poverty.

The Carter Center »
Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, Building Hope--The Carter Center, in partnership with Emory University, is guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering; it seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health. The Carter Center is guided by five principles:

  1. The Center emphasizes action and results. Based on careful research and analysis, it is prepared to take timely action on important and pressing issues.
  2. The Center does not duplicate the effective efforts of others.
  3. The Center addresses difficult problems and recognizes the possibilities of failure as an acceptable risk.
  4. The Center is nonpartisan and acts as a neutral in dispute resolution activities.
  5. The Center believes that people can improve their lives when provided with the necessary skills, knowledge, and access to resources.

Culture of Peace News Network »
The Culture of Peace News Network is a global network of interactive Internet sites in many languages for information exchange on events and media productions that promote one or more of the eight keys of a culture of peace. It is a project of the United Nations International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.

Doctors Without Borders »
Providing Medical Relief Worldwide--Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation.

MSF was founded in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who believed that all people have the right to medical care regardless of race,religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people supersede respect for national borders. It was the first non-governmental organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and publicly bear witness to the plight of the populations they served.

Fellowship of Reconciliation »
FOR seeks to replace violence, war, racism, and economic injustice with nonviolence, peace, and justice. We are an interfaith organization committed to active nonviolence as a transforming way of life and as a means of radical change. We educate, train, build coalitions, and engage in nonviolent and compassionate actions locally, nationally, and globally.

Since 1915, The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) has carried on programs and educational projects concerned with domestic and international peace and justice, nonviolent alternatives to conflict, and the rights of conscience. A Nonviolent, Interfaith, tax exempt organization, The FOR promotes nonviolence and has members from many religious and ethnic traditions. It is a part of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR), which has affiliates in over 40 countries.

Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy »
Established in 1992, the mission of the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy is to promote a systems approach to peacebuilding and to facilitate the transformation of deep-rooted social conflict. The Institute is chaired by Ambassador John W. McDonald. IMTD is based in Arlington, VA, and has 1237 members in 31 countries.

IMTD was co-founded by Louise Diamond, Founder of The Peace Company.

National Peace Foundation »
The National Peace Foundation's mission is to strengthen the foundations for peacebuilding, peace education and conflict resolution by promoting democratic justice through partnerships, intercultural exchanges and citizen networks. The National Peace Foundation is guided by the principles, outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The National Peace Foundation's programs help people and their leaders develop citizen networks, advance peace education, and promote democratic values through international exchanges.

New Songs for Peace »
This UNESCO-endorsed project is intended to encourage people to think about peace, talk about peace, and write a new song that we will collect and self-publish in a book. These songs will promote peace, cultural acceptance and understanding for those who work towards peace throughout the world.
With individual advocates such as UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the support of global organizations like UNESCO, New Songs For Peace will make its contribution to peace through the musical expression of international artists.

Pathways To Peace »
Pathways To Peace is an international not-for-profit peace building, educational, and consulting organization. The mission of Pathways To Peace is threefold:

  1. to expand the comprehension and substantive expression of "PEACE" and peacebuilding practices at all levels;
  2. to build Cultures of Peace by uniting and enhancing the strengths of existing organizations and programs along eight paths to Peace;
  3. to contribute, through consultation and direct participation, to the evolving mission of the United Nations and to citizens' worldwide participation in the International Day of Peace (Hear The Children Day).

Pax Christi USA »
Pax Christi is the national Catholic peace movement. Pax Christi strives to create a world that reflects the Peace of Christ by exploring, articulating, and witnessing to the call of Christian nonviolence. This work begins in personal life and extends to communities of reflection and action to transform structures of society. Pax Christi USA rejects war, preparations for war, and every form of violence and domination. It advocates primacy of conscience, economic and social justice, and respect for creation.

The Peace Alliance »
The Peace Alliance works to support the development of a US Department of Peace.

  • A Department of Peace would help move the polarization of our national political dialogue towards the implementation of our common goals in the areas of reducing violence and cultivating a more peaceful society.
  • A Department of Peace would appropriate approximately 8 billion dollars, (the equivalent of 2 percent of our annual defense budget) to go toward proactive, proven policies and programs that address the root sources of domestic and international violence.
  • A Department of Peace would implement measurably effective intervention for issues such as, school and gang violence, racial and hate crimes, domestic violence, reduced prison incarceration rates, and international conflicts with programs and methodologies that are fundamentally more effective than the application of brute force.
  • A Department of Peace would establish a U.S. Peace Academy as sophisticated and effective as a U.S. Military Academy.

PEACE X PEACE »
PEACE X PEACE empowers women to connect across cultural divides, using technology to weave a global web of communication, education and action for sustainable peace.
  • PEACE X PEACE connects women into a worldwide movement to build the foundations for peace, and helps bring women’s and men’s voices into balance to strengthen the possibility for substantive peace, where each person is valued and each person’s life enriched.

  • PEACE X PEACE uses technology to connect women across cultural divides and misunderstandings, fostering collaborative actions for peace and security. PXP empowers women to know their rights, to support one another, and to work collectively to shift both the perception and reality of women’s role in building peace.

  • PEACE X PEACE is dedicated to creating a world where women are no longer those most tragically affected by conflict and strife, but are the core power building substantive, sustainable peace for all.

Peaceful Tommorows »
Peaceful Tomorrows is an advocacy organization founded by family members of September 11th victims who have united to turn our grief into action for peace. Our mission is to seek effective, nonviolent solutions to terrorism, and to acknowledge our common experience with all people similarly affected by violence throughout the world. By conscientiously exploring peaceful options in our search for justice, we hope to spare additional families the suffering we have experienced—as well as to break the cycle of violence and retaliation engendered by war. In doing so, we work to create a safer world for the present and future generations.

Public Conversations Project »
PCP's mission is to foster a more inclusive, empathic and collaborative society by promoting constructive conversations and relationships among those who have differing values, world views, and positions about divisive public issues.

Our mission is to transform the way the world deals with conflict: away from adversarial approaches, toward cooperative solutions. Our vision is of a world in which:

  • Individuals, organisations, governments and societies respond to their differences in non-adversarial ways - where those differences stimulate social progress, rather than precipitate violence.
  • The predominant approach to conflict is to reach out to cooperate with those we disagree with - where reconciliation is considered the norm.
  • Our underlying respect for one another and our shared interests and concerns are not overwhelmed by our differing points of view.
  • In their everyday lives, human beings are safer and more secure.

Our goal is to make finding common ground the common thing.

Compassion in Action: Seva Builds Partnerships to Respond to Locally Defined Problems with Culturally Sustainable Solutions--In the vision that inspires Seva's work in the world, health is not simply the elimination of disease; it is a condition of wholeness and freedom of being. We believe that international service requires a consciousness of the interplay of both economic and political forces as well as social, cultural, and spiritual influences. Tikkun Community»
Tikkun in Hebrew means "to mend, repair and transform the world."
From their core vision statement: "... We are a community of people from many faiths and traditions, called together by TIKKUN magazine and its vision of healing and transforming our world. Based in SanFrancisco, CA, the United Religions Initiative promotes interfaith cooperation to end religiously motivated violence & help create a culture of peace.

Volunteers for Peace »
Volunteers for Peace offers over 2400 affordable international voluntary service projects in more than 90 countries which feature intercultural immersion and community service. Since 1982, we have exchanged over 22,000 volunteers.

Witness for Peace »
Witness for Peace is a politically independent grassroots organization seeking to support peace & sustainable economies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

World Peace Prayer Society »
"May Peace Prevail on Earth" is the concise message and prayer of the World Peace Prayer Society. "The World Peace Prayer Society is dedicated to inspiring people to embrace compassion, to respect life and to live in harmony with one another. Peace on earth can only become a reality when all people rise above national boundaries, politics, religion and ideologies. We need to celebrate our cultural diversities rather than using them as a reason for conflict."
